Our top apps of 2022

2022 was a good year for apps, and we've rounded up some of our favorites.

Topping the list is Craft Docs, a capable but easy-to-use writing app that has it all, including a built-in AI writing assistant.

If you haven't heard of it, read on, because we have some other great app recommendations that aren't super-well-known, either. They include a fitness app that sounds perfect for keeping those New Year's resolutions.

Also in today's newsletter: It's going to be a big year for Apple hardware (but not the usual suspects); the iPhone 15 seems to be feature-locked already; Apple Maps can help find a parking space; and laugh along at 10 very wrongheaded iPhone predictions from 2007.

With so many apps to choose from, knowing the ones we (the Cult of Mac team) actually used and loved this last year might help you nail that New Year’s resolution.

Every year, Apple has significant hardware upgrades planned for at least a few devices in its product lineup. 2023 could be an outlier, though.

Contrary to rumors, the upcoming Apple silicon-powered Mac Pro might disappoint. A new report suggests the forthcoming Mac Pro refresh will feature the same design as 2019's Intel-based model.

Kids (and adults) love to collect toys, but what if they could create their own? That’s precisely the point with the Toybox 3D printer deluxe bundle, which packs innovative technology into a simplified product perfect for young minds.

This week on Cult of Mac’s podcast: The more we hear about Apple’s upcoming AR/VR headset, the more we’re perplexed about who is actually going to buy one. We take a long, hard look at the latest leaks — and come up shaking our heads.

It's a fairly early stage in bringing the product to market, but it means the final feature set and design are essentially complete and Apple is already thinking about assembling the device.

iPhone users can now find a parking space with Apple Maps. Starting Monday, the navigation application comes with SpotHero built in, giving parking options for more than 8,000 locations across North America. The feature is free, though the spaces are not. Here’s how to use it.

People don’t really use AM and FM radios anymore, but streaming live content is hardly dead. Lots of podcasts do live streams — and you can still use your phone to tune into radio stations online. The Broadcasts app makes listening to live music and radio very easy. Here's how it works.

On January 9, 2007, Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave the world its first look at the iPhone onstage during the Macworld conference in San Francisco.

Seeing the future is tough, even for experts. That's the only lesson we can learn from horribly misguided iPhone predictions from 2007.

So many people love Apple gear because Cupertino gets a lot right with its hardware. That certainly includes monitors, and not just the phenomenal Pro Display XDR and new Studio Display. We see a fair number of new computer setups relying on classic Apple screens like Cinema Display and Thunderbolt Display. Today’s featured MacBook Pro and Xbox setup is a good example. Even with a modern gaming console — given the right adapter — a display from a dozen years ago is still keeping it real.

Asked if his greatest creation was the iPhone or iPad, Steve Jobs replied: "No. Apple -- the company. Because anybody can create products, but Apple keeps creating great products." -- Steve Jobs, 2011.
