Thunderbolt vs USB-C

One connector to confuse us all!

What’s the best thing to happen in cables for decades? Why, of course, it’s the USB-C connector!

You gotta the simple, rugged design, and that the connector is reversible — it’s impossible to plug in the wrong way.

I won’t even consider buying a new gadget unless it’s got USB-C: No more mini-USB for me. These days that’s not so difficult. USB-C is now basically the standard connector for all electronics, thanks to the EU.

But not everything is perfect in USB-C land. For one thing, USB-C shares the same connector design as Thunderbolt, a rival standard from Intel.

USB-C and Thunderbolt may look the same, but under the hood, they’re quite different. And after a slow start, Thunderbolt 5 is starting to become more mainstream. Apple has built it into the latest Macs (the M4 mini, Studio and MacBook Pros), and it’ll be coming to more Apple devices this year.

It’s handy to know, then, what exactly is the difference between Thunderbolt and USB-C — if you weren’t clued in, you might be surprised.

One more thing ...

The things you most regret in life are things you didn't do. What you really regret was never asking that girl to dance. In business, if I knew earlier what I know now, I'd have probably done some things a lot better than I did, but I also would've probably done some other things a lot worse. But so what? It's more important to be engaged in the present.
