Thanks to AI, we’re likely going to see a raft of innovative new products that might upend our current gadgets entirely.

That’s the hope of startups like Jony Ive’s io (now owned by OpenAI) as well as established giants like Meta. Both are working on a new generation of AI-powered devices that might make current iPhones and HomePods look as antiquated as gramophones.

That will create a dilemma for John Ternus, who just officially took over as Apple’s new CEO.

Replacing Tim Cook after his 15 years at the top, Ternus might be in the unenviable position of having to cannibalize the very products he helped develop during his 25-year career at Apple.

Also in today’s newsletter:

  • Tim Cook has a reputation as a finance and operations whiz, not a product guy. But as one of his first public interviews after taking over as CEO shows — the top X post below — he had a very Steve Jobsian view that if you make great products, the money will follow. Let’s hope John Ternus has the same philosophy.

  • It looks like Apple’s rushing out the next version of AirPods a little early. Here’s what’s in store.

  • 🔥 DEAL OF THE DAY: OK, this “deal” is still kinda pricey, but I love a good robovac/mop, this one gets great reviews, and it’s 40% off! #affiliate

  • Three more aging MacBooks just hit the dreaded obsolete list, but oddly, they may still be eligible for battery repairs.

  • Apple TV just added a new slate of classic movies, and it includes one of my favorites: Master and Commander. In fact, there are at least four greats on the list.

  • I really think this is a good deal.

  • We reviewed a whopping external drive bay that has a ton of advantages for massive, expandable local storage, but a couple of important caveats for Mac users. See our hands-on review (there’s also an exclusive discount).

Don't ask what I would do, just do the right thing.
