I recall clearly that when Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1996, the reaction was almost universally negative. I was working as a reporter for MacWeek at the time, and we carefully tracked every move and announcement.
Most pundits dismissed Jobs as a mere “marketer,” a slick, fast-talker who’d got lucky co-founding Apple but had failed spectacularly with his follow-up tech company, NeXT. So when Apple bought NeXT and brought Jobs back into the fold, I can’t remember any positive reactions.
Jobs had no technical chops, many observers said, and he would fail spectacularly to turn Apple around.
The prevailing sentiment was captured by Michael Dell, who famously said that if he were in Jobs' shoes, he’d shut Apple down and give the remaining money back to shareholders. It was a feeling shared by many.
Apple seemed unsalvageable, especially by someone whose career up to that point was pretty checkered. Pixar had a couple of hits, but NeXT had stumbled from one disappointment to another. And after shuttering its hardware division, NeXT, too, seemed headed for the chopping block.
But of course, we know that the pundits were wrong, and Jobs’ return marked the beginning of one of the biggest turnarounds in business history.
NeXT was far from a failure, actually. It developed fabulous technology, and Jobs had assembled a great team of seasoned technologists who went on to lead Apple’s turnaround with one hit product after another.
It’s all captured very well in a new book about Jobs’ “wilderness years,” the decade or so he spent away from Apple. The book features a ton of previously unreported stories. And it’s sometimes uncannily detailed about behind-the-scenes events at NeXT that helped turn Jobs into the kind of leader capable of saving the troubled company he’d co-founded.
Here’s our review of Steve Jobs in Exile.
Also in today’s newsletter:
I‘d known forever that Apple used defective or “binned” chips in some of its products, but had little idea about the scope. It’s kinda mind-boggling, but it makes a lot of sense, given Apple’s massive supply chain.
Yes, it’s true: Apple is offering its flagship AirPods Pro 3 earbuds as an incentive to sign up for Apple Card — but there’s lots of fine print.
🔥 DEAL OF THE DAY: As a podcaster myself, I’ve heard good things about the Elgato Wave:3 microphone. Amazon’s currently offering 20% off.
Apple just showed off a bunch of new accessibility features powered by Apple Intelligence. The company doesn’t explicitly say so, but they’re surely powered by Google’s Gemini — and they offer a sneak peek at the kind of agentic AI we should see very shortly at WWDC.
Can’t say I’ve used Genmoji a lot, but this AI-driven upgrade might get me to use Apple’s custom emoji maker more often.
We kinda dashed off yesterday’s poll about the dangers of AI, but it generated a lot of thoughtful comments — see below.

One more thing ...
Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.
You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.
If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.
Today’s poll
Be honest, back in the day, were you optimistic of pessimistic about Steve Jobs' return?
