Samsung disses iPhone 14 before it's even released
Samsung has a long history of poking at its archrival Apple, and the company's latest TV ad doesn't disappoint.
Samsung accuses iPhone 14 of lacking innovation -- and the device isn't even out yet!
The Korean giant says if the iPhone 14 doesn't fold (and it won't) or have a 108MP camera (the rumor is 48MP), it's not as innovative as Samsung's new flagship models.
It's not the worst ad ever, but I'm not convinced, and I wonder who is.
Are prospective iPhone 14 buyers going to be persuaded the new handset falls short? I very much doubt it.
How about fence-sitters, trying to decide between iPhone 14 and a folding Samsung phone? Maybe, but how many fence-sitters are there these days?
It appeals, I think, to folks who already have a Samsung or Android handset and are thinking of upgrading.
That's fine, but according to a new survey of the "active installed base" -- the number of smartphones in actual use -- Apple just passed the 50% mark for the first time.
50%! That means among all the smartphones actually in use, more than half of them are iPhones, according to Financial Times (paywall link).
That's a massive number, and it all belongs to Apple. There's only one iPhone-maker, whereas the other half of active handsets are split between several Android handset manufacturers.
Samsung leads this bunch, and still sells plenty of phones, but its share of the market is slipping while Apple steadily gains.
And I don't think it's because Apple isn't "innovating" with folding screens and high-megapixel phones.
It's because iPhones are better.

Samsung’s latest ad takes a dig at Apple for the lack of innovation reportedly coming in this year’s iPhones. Titled “Buckle Up,” and coming just days before Apple’s iPhone 14 event on September 7, the ad focuses on some key Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 4 features.
Take a walk out to the cutting edge with Lenovo Glasses T1, which put a tiny OLED screen in front of each eye, where they offer a “portable and private big screen experience.” Users can even connect the wearable to their Mac, or to an iPhone for use on the go.
Although Apple has yet to even admit it’s working on a self-driving electric vehicle, plenty of people want to buy one. Almost a third of recent car buyers say they’d consider an Apple car. And that includes more than half of Tesla owners. It seems clear that if the Mac-maker can transform itself into a car-maker, it could have a real hit on its hands.

Say you’re in the kitchen and you hear an alarm going off on the iPad in your bedroom. Rather than walking across the house to to deactivate it, you can use Siri on your iPhone or HomePod to shut off the alarm. This method also works with timers (and a variety of devices, too). Here’s how.

On September 2, 1985, the tech rumor mill reported that Jobs was on the verge of setting up his own company to take on Apple. Bingo!
When you look at a lot of computer setups showcased on social media, it’s not difficult to see that many of them are staged. They’re so well put together and photographed, you just can’t see normal slobs owning them. But sometimes the internet tricks you with a surprisingly slick photograph of a real person’s setup.

We're thinking of the people of Jackson, Mississippi who are struggling for that most basic of necessities this summer — clean water. Apple is donating to relief efforts on the ground aimed at distributing food and water immediately.
