Roll your own Spotify, Slack and Discord

Save battery life and memory with DIY web apps.

Once again, our how-tos writer D. Griffin Jones brings the knowledge.

I had no idea that popular apps like Spotify, Slack and Discord are horrible resource hogs because they basically run a full copy of Google Chrome inside each window.

But now — thanks to the upcoming macOS Sonoma — there’s a better way.

You can roll your own lightweight versions of these apps using the new web apps capability in Sonoma.

The resulting web apps act like native apps. They can be launched from the Mac’s Dock, and a copy sits in the Applications folder. But because they use the same system resources as Safari, they are much more lightweight.

It’s very simple and easy. Here’s how to get started with web apps.
