No Apple TV for you!

Sorry, but Cupertino's never going to make a television set.

For about 10 years, Wall Street analyst Gene Munster said Apple would release a TV set any day. Two decades later, Apple still hasn’t done it.

But the rumor refuses to die, and it recently picked up steam with a couple of reports from ace reporter Mark Gurman, who says Apple’s actively exploring making a telly.

It’s a compelling idea, because Apple TV+ is finally starting to take off, and I’m sure Tim Cook would love customers to tune straight into Apple TV+ as soon as they turn on their sets, rather than having to launch an app or switch TV inputs.

But before you get too excited at the prospect of an Apple-branded boob tube, our writer Ed Hardy is here to throw some much-need cold water on the idea. Sorry, but here’s why we’re never going to see an Apple-branded TV.

Also in today’s newsletter:

  • Apologies for all the deals deals deals in today’s newsletter. It’s the day before Thanksgiving and only suckers like me are working, so there’s not much news today.

  • The good news is that there are (to my mind) three exceptional Apple-related early Black Friday deals: AirPods Pro 2 for the lowest price ever; fab Beats Studio Pro headphones for $150 off; and the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air for just $750. (I recently bought this model myself. It’s an exceptionally beautiful laptop, and that price is a steal.)

  • We have more personal recommendations from the Cult of Mac writing team about gear they love that’s on sale right now: Dave’s go-to Beats headphones, Rajesh’s favorite iPad and Griffin’s beloved RAID storage. (Yeah, I know, a RAID drive? 🤷)

  • Perfect for the holidays — how to throw a karaoke party using Apple Music Sing.

  • Today’s the day in Apple history that one poor Apple staffer got thrown under the bus for Apple Maps, a disaster at launch that’s since turned into probably the best mapping service out there.

  • Happy Thanksgiving, everyone — and Black Friday.
