Meet RSI-busting RollerMouse
Ingenious mouse alternative is great, but is it worth $400?
For years and years, I’d end my work day with my right hand stiff and frozen into a painful claw.
I’d also get frequent wrist pain and numbness in my fingers.
It was caused by my mouse, of course. It might have led to a serious RSI, or repetitive stress injury, if I hadn’t switched to a trackpad, which gives me far less issues.
Cult of Mac managing editor Lewis Wallace has had it even worse, and has spent years trying out different mice or trackballs, wrist support braces, and making his setup more ergonomic. He’s had some success, but he’s not out of the woods. Occassionally, it flares up.
In fact, RSI seems to plague most of the Cult of Mac staff, and it may affect you and lots of people at your workplace too.
Cult of Mac writer David Snow has had his share of RSI issues, and so he was very interested when given the chance to review an unusual mouse-cum-wrist-rest combo that promises to ease the pain and discomfort of RSI.
Dave gave the Contour Design RollerMouse Red a thorough testing, and his hands-on review awards it four-and-a-half-stars (out of five) — despite it’s high price.
When it comes to RSI, the cost of the RollerMouse is but a drop in the bucket compared to what the pain and discomfort it can save you. See Dave’s glowing review.

Apple cleverly uses magnets in a bunch of its products, and it’s set to use even more. Cupertino just announced a $500 million deal with a Texas-based manufacturer of rare earth magnets, plus a new recycling plant to recapture rare earth materials. Apple’s magnets are made with 100% recycled rare earth elements already, so this deal looks like about expanding capacity.
Apple’s also great at hinges. Every MacBook has special hinges that allow the lid to be opened with one finger while the lower part of the machine stays firmly planted to your desk. These hinges were shown off at a London design museum and Jony Ive is very proud of them. Now, a new hinge is key to making a folding iPhone without a screen crease.

Apple TV+ looks set do well at the Emmys. Severance leads the noms while Seth Rogan’s new comedy The Studio breaks a record set by Ted Lasso.
I’m really looking forward to this for inexplicable reasons, because I haven’t played games for years, but Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will be coming to Mac this week. It’ll cost and arm and a leg, but will run on M1 hardware!

One more thing ...
People think focus means saying ‘yes’ to the thing you've got to focus on. But that's not what it means at all. It means saying ‘no’ to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I'm actually as proud of many of the things we haven't done as the things we have done.
