Why is the M1 Ultra so expensive?

The new Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra chip is a screamer, but it's also pricey. It starts at $3,999.

The base model Mac Studio costs considerably less. It starts at $1,999 -- half the price of the Ultra model.

That means you can buy two Mac Studio computers with M1 Max chips for the same price as a single Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra.

Yes, you get extra storage and RAM when you buy the Ultra, but you are effectively paying an extra $2,000 for a second chip.

Apple blew our minds Tuesday with its all-new and somewhat unexpected Mac Studio. The impressive M1 Ultra model, which is significantly more powerful than even the fastest Mac Pro, starts at a whopping $3,999 — a considerable jump from the M1 Max model, which starts at $1,999. And I can’t work out why it’s so expensive!

The Apple M1 processor inside the newly announced iPad Air 5 makes the tablet as powerful as the similarly sized iPad Pro. Given the price difference, the new Air is a better option for most people.
