Back in 1908, you could get a Ford Model T in any color you wanted, as long as it was black. Why? Because black paint dried quickly, compared to weeks for more vibrant colors.
General Motors successfully competed with the crazy-popular Model T by developing fast-drying paints in a range of colors, bringing all-important “eye appeal” to its vehicles (in the words of GM’s CEO at the time, Alfred P. Sloan Jr.).
Eye appeal proves important in personal electronics, too, and a big part of Apple’s strategy has been to regularly offer the iPhone in new colors.
