Yesterday, John Gruber of Daring Fireball posted a poll on social media asking iPhone Duo buyers their estimated ship dates.

The results are mildly surprising.

Given the headlines about a three-month backlog, most preorder customers — about 80% of Gruber’s respondents — expect delivery in October or November, which is much better than you’d think.

Of course, social media polls should be taken with several large grains of salt, but in the absence of any official numbers from Apple, it’s perhaps the best survey so far of iPhone Duo ship dates. And it appears things are not as backlogged as feared.

If you’re in the market for the pricey handset, the numbers are fairly encouraging.

Better yet, Apple is starting to inform some customers that their ship dates are moving up. It’s a trickle, but it’s a start! And you gotta bet that John Ternus is doing everything possible to speed up supply. There’s hope yet that you might — might — get one for Xmas.

We saw a way to build a software system that was about 10 times as powerful [as] any PC. And where new software could be created in a fourth of the time. So we spent four years with 50 to 100 of the best software people we could find building this new software system. And it’s turned out beautifully.
