Why isn't Face ID coming to Mac?

It's a complete mystery to me why Apple hasn't yet put Face ID in the Mac (or the otherwise-great iPad mini, for that matter).

Face ID is by far the best biometric security system available for Apple devices, and I love it. Unlocking is seamless. Filling in passwords is easy. It's secure and reliable.

So, after nearly five years of having Face ID on iPhone and iPad, why isn't it built into the iMac and various MacBooks?

The answer is actually kinda obvious, but it still sucks.
