How do you gauge demand for a new iPhone that seems to be buzzy, but costs a small fortune and might only have limited, niche appeal? Plus, it’s a royal pain to manufacture at scale.
That’s the situation facing Apple with the upcoming folding iPhone.
Apple already has headaches aplenty with constrained memory supply. The folding iPhone presents new problems.
Yes, some people seem very excited about it, and it’ll likely appeal to a small army of early adopters.
But the folding phone category overall is relatively tiny, and Apple’s first entry is untested and expensive. It’s also tricky to make. Initially, it’s going to be tough for Apple to see whether there’s a sustained market for it.
The last thing Apple needs is warehouses full of unsold, hard-to-make folding iPhones — so the company looks likely to pull an iPhone X.
