Which iPad? iPad 10 or M1 iPad Air?

When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in the late 1990s, he was baffled by the number of Macs the company sold.

There were several major lines -- Quadras, Power Macs, Performas and PowerBooks -- each with a dozen different models. But there was little to distinguish between them except their confusing product names, like Performa 5200CD, Performa 5210CD, Performa 5215CD and Performa 5220CD.

"What I found when I got here was a zillion and one products," Jobs would later say. "It was amazing. And I started to ask people, now why would I recommend a 3400 over a 4400? When should somebody jump up to a 6500, but not a 7300? And after three weeks, I couldn't figure this out. If I couldn't figure this out ... how could our customers figure this out?"

This sounds just like Apple's current iPad lineup, which now boasts four different models -- the iPad, iPad Air, iPad Pro and iPad mini.

But what's the difference between the new iPad 10, say, and the recently refreshed iPad Air? Our guide lays it all out.

Meanwhile, Apple sells the M1 iPad Air, with more powerful internals, for $599. So, should you spring for the Air and pay that additional $150, or save your money and buy the new 10th-gen iPad?

"For me, the most exciting thing in the software area is the Internet, and part of the reason for that is that no one owns it! It's a free-for-all, much more like the early days of the personal computer. The rate of innovation is really high." -- Steve Jobs, 1996.
