Yesterday, we ran a poll asking Cult of Mac Today readers whether they liked the pictures generated by Image Playground, Apple’s new generative AI app (see the results below).
The overwhelming response was, “No, they’re horrible!”
That’s a pretty harsh judgment (but I don’t disagree). Hopefully, Apple will add more styles to supplement the two rather cloying ones currently supported (Animation and Illustration).
I think you guys will like Genmoji a lot more — based on nothing more than the fact that I like them myself.
Genmoji are custom emoji you can conjure up in iOS 18.2, currently in beta.
Like Image Playground, you can let your imagination run riot, creating custom images of almost anything — except NSFW stuff, natch. (This ain’t Android!)
Better yet, you can make emojis of your friends, family or pets.
It’s so fun, in fact, that the waitlist for Genmoji and Image Playground seems to be growing longer. Currently, it appears to be taking days to get approved — although that’s not everyone’s experience.

One more thing ...
Much of the industry has lived off the Macintosh for over 10 years now, slowly copying the Mac's revolutionary user interface. Now the time has come for new innovation, and where better than Apple for this to spring from? Who else has consistently led this industry — first with the Apple II, then the Macintosh and LaserWriter? With this merger, the advanced software from NeXT will be married with Apple's very high-volume hardware platforms and marketing channels to create another breakthrough, leapfrogging existing platforms, and fueling Apple and the industry copycats for the next 10 years and beyond. I still have very deep feelings for Apple, and it gives me great joy to play a role in architecting Apple's future.
