Finally, iPhone is getting web app alerts
Do you love Wordle but wish it offered push notifications to tell you when a new puzzle becomes available?
That may soon be possible in iOS 15.4. Currently in beta, the update reportedly includes Safari-style push notifications for web apps like Wordle.
At the moment, only natively installed apps can push notifications. Web apps are frozen out of the notification party.
Of course, Apple has enabled push notifications in Safari on the Mac for donkey's years. It's not always great, though: You can quickly get a lot of alerts.
Allowing Safari-style push notifications on iOS would open your iPhone to lots of extra alerts, as websites pumped out notifications for their latest post or deal.
This could quickly become a big, hairy nightmare, and you might find yourself opting out of everything you signed up for -- except for new Wordle alerts, of course.

Apple’s first iOS 15.4 beta, rolled out to registered developers last week, lays the groundwork for web apps to deliver push notifications. The feature, long available in Safari for macOS, always stood out as a notable omission on iPhone and iPad. Fortunately for those who use mobile web apps frequently, that looks set to change in the near future.
The Ophidia case brings “vintage and contemporary together through its archive-inspired design elements” — whatever that means. It’s also emblazoned with a pretentious quote (in Latin, of course) on the inside.
Both services use kernel extensions that Apple is deprecating in its next Monterey update.
