Customization coming to CarPlay

New leaks suggest CarPlay 2 will be cool and customizable.

Apple has long had a love/hate relationship with users customizing their device interfaces.

Mostly hate, actually.

Steve Jobs was never a fan of customization. Under his watch, most Apple devices were locked down pretty tight.

Yes, you could use custom wallpapers on Mac, iPhone and iPad. But other tweaks, like bigger overhauls of the look of the OS, remained mostly verboten.

But in recent years, Apple has done an about-face. You can now tweak many UI elements in iOS, for example, adjusting aspects of the iPhone operating system’s appearance.

And it looks like this liberal tweakability may be coming to CarPlay, Apple’s infotainment system for autos.

The latest leaks suggest users will be able to customize CarPlay via widgets, which would be quite a shake-up from its current uncustomizable interface.

One more thing ...

Mac stands for what we are as a company — taking technology that's out of reach of the people and making it really great. That's what we did with the Apple II, and that's what we're going to do again with Mac. Computers and society are out on a first date in this decade, and for some crazy reason, we're in the right place at the right time to make that romance blossom.
