When Apple first released Camera Control for iPhone, I found it hopelessly confusing.
Instead of just taking a picture as I hoped, the damn button would often launch me into some befuddling setting.
Instead of just snapping a quick pic, I’d find myself fiddling with some controls instead.
I was far from alone, so Apple changed the default behavior of the button. Now, by default, the Camera Control behaves much more like a simple shutter button.
After I finally trained myself to use the Camera Control and have gotten used to it, I turned the camera controls back on, and guess what — they’re actually pretty darn great! Especially for zooming.
Zooming is a control I use a lot, and having super-quick access to it via the Camera Control has really changed how I use my iPhone camera.
I might even start using some of the other controls, too! That’s how confident I am!
Here’s our guide to using Camera Control. It might be time for you to turn it back on, too.

Phew! This is good news for the folding iPhone.
Another thing I find frustrating is rearranging icons on my iPhone’s Home Screen. It’s such a chore, I don’t really bother beyond adding a couple of my most-used apps to the first screen. Anything else I just search for. But it looks like this upcoming iOS feature might finally get me to curate my Home Screen a bit more.
Supply chain shortages continue to impact Apple: Its high-end Macs are delayed, and Cupertino might cut features from the next iPhone to maintain margins. Boo!!
🔥 DEAL OF THE DAY: Don’t tell Cult of Mac writer Ed Hardy that the teeny-weeny Supertiny charger from Rolling Square is on sale. He loves it so much, he’d probably exhaust the entire stock. #affiliate
Worried about hackers? Tempted by iPhone’s Lockdown Mode? It’s probably overkill.
I’m like a magpie when it comes to earbuds. I have a growing collection of buds that, to my shame, I barely use (I’ve only got two ears, after all). So I’m extremely tempted by these new earbuds that rival AirPods but boast more features and cost way, way less.
Hey Tim, if you’re reading and are curious about the next iPhone color, check out the results of last Friday’s poll. There’s one color that stands out for readers of this newsletter. See below.

One more thing ...
Mike [Markkula, the first Apple investor and early CEO] really took me under his wing. His values were much aligned with mine. He emphasized that you should never start a company with the goal of getting rich. Your goal should be making something you believe in and making a company that will last.
Today’s poll
Do you use the advanced Camera Control settings?
Results from last Friday’s poll: Cosmic orange, dark cherry or something else?
