Confirmed: Apple’s Sept. 7 iPhone event is official

It's always fun to parse Apple's event invites for clues.

The latest invite -- for a hybrid recorded/live event on Sept. 7 -- has the tagline "far out" and a celestial theme.

Does it imply the iPhone 14 will get a periscopic zoom lens, which has been rumored?

Nah, that's most likely for the iPhone 15, due next year.

Perhaps it indicates satellite communications coming to iPhone, also long-rumored?

That seems unlikely, too.

Maybe it portends that the iPhone 14 Pro will be a total black hole for your money. (Completely plausible, as we expect price hikes for the high-end models.)

Still, my best guess is that "far out" is hippie-speak for something fantastic, which is totally in line with Apple's California counterculture roots.

Tim Cook will dress up as a '60s pothead with a long wig and bell-bottoms and say "far out" every time a new product or feature is announced.

Now that'd be far out.

Apple sent out invitations Wednesday to a “far out” event scheduled for September 7. There’s nothing in the invite to indicate what’s on the agenda, but this will almost certainly be the debut of the iPhone 14 lineup and Apple Watch Series 8. Unlike such events for the past couple of years, members of the tech press are being invited to attend in person.

The build number for iPadOS 16 beta 7 confirms that the release of this new version has been pushed back several weeks. This falls in line with an earlier leak that iPads wouldn’t see an update until October.

Steelseries, known for gaming headsets, has jumped into the desktop speakers pool with a big splash. Its new Arena line of desktop speakers is the company’s first product of that type.

If your iPhone can't get past the Apple logo and keeps rebooting -- known as getting stuck in a "boot loop" -- iToolab FixGo can help.

The Design the Next iPhone site lets you have a laugh by making whatever monstrosity you want out of Apple’s market-leading handset. And each time you make a new design, Apple CEO Tim Cook pops up with some encouraging marketing-speak.

The highly rated animated comedy will return to Apple TV+ in early September for more musical adventures. Watch the new Central Park trailer for a sneak peek.

Everybody knows a leather Apple Watch band is a timeless and elegant accessory, just as it has been for watches in general for decades. But not all leather bands are equal. Laut, for example, offers its Prestige Leather Apple Watch Band made from premium Saffiano leather. It finishes your look in style.

On August 24, 2011, Steve Jobs stepped down from his role as Apple CEO as his health worsened, with Tim Cook taking over the role.

Some people care deeply about cable management, with nary a cord to be seen in their computer setups. Others couldn’t care less about it, leaving wire-spaghetti all over the place. And folks in the middle want to do it right, but meh, maybe next week, and maybe only somewhat. Today’s featured MacBook Pro and iPad Pro setup stakes out much of the ground described above. Cable management is in play, but it’s done in a way that drove some neatniks crazy (while others applauded the controlled mayhem).
