Tim Cook had a pretty flawless run as Apple CEO, but one thing I’ll never forgive him for is switching iPhone preorders to 5 a.m. Pacific.
Of course, he’s a notoriously early riser who’s already been up and about for a couple of hours at that time. But for regular folks like me who live in San Francisco, it’s the middle of the bloody night!
I grudgingly woke at 4:45 a.m. today and tried to preorder the iPhone Duo with just one sleepy eye open, but ofc, Apple’s online store was down.
Maddeningly, the store said, “We love your early morning energy,” which just really rubbed it in.
By the time the online store finally loaded for me at about 5:10 a.m., iPhone Duo ship dates had already slipped to late November. And by the time I checked out, they were early December.
Not too long after that, delivery estimates for the hot new handset were late January — which is completely crazy.
I don’t remember any Apple product being immediately back-ordered for three months within minutes of going on sale.

🔥 DEAL OF THE DAY: I skipped AppleCare+ on my iPhone Duo order ‘cos it added another $500. I’m getting this bulletproof case instead, which is half off at just $50. #affiliate
I have a Withings smart scale, which is great, but this change makes me want to throw it out the window!
In just a few short weeks, Meta catapulted itself from an AI also-ran into one of the leading labs. Its latest release for Mac sounds quite incredible.

AI research, explained in one morning email
Most of what shapes AI next year is sitting in a research paper today. Keeping up with them is a full-time job, and the abstracts don't help.
TLDR AI is the newsletter that does the translating. Each morning you get the handful of papers worth knowing about, curated by Anthropic and ex-Google engineers, with a plain-English summary of what they found and why it matters.
You come away smarter about AI research in the time it takes to finish your coffee.
Free, and delivered to 1.1M+ inboxes every morning.

One more thing ...
One of the ways that I believe people express their appreciation to the rest of humanity is to make something wonderful and put it out there. And you never meet the people. You never shake their hands. You never hear their story or tell yours. But somehow, in the act of making something with a great deal of care and love, something’s transmitted there.
