Button or cutout?
On iPhone cases, what works best with the new Camera Control button?
It took me a bit of fiddling to learn how to use the new Camera Control button on my brand-new iPhone 16 Pro Max.
I couldn't master the half-press. No matter what I tried, I couldn’t get it to work. (The half-press allows you to change functions: zoom, depth, Photographic Styles and so on).
How do you “half” press a button anyway? Every time I tried to half-press it, I’d full-press it instead.
The problem, it turns out, was the case I was using!
Even though I bought Apple’s official silicone case for the iPhone, which has a capacitive button, it’s not as sensitive as the button itself.
So when I tried the half-press — which is really just resting your fingertip on the button without actually depressing it — it didn't register properly.
It was only when I took the case off that it worked, and the penny dropped.
And now that I’ve learned how to use the Camera Control, I’m finally able to get it to work with the case on.
Because Apple developed the new button in secret, it took a lot of case manufacturers by surprise. Most cases available right now for the new iPhones come with simple cutouts for the Camera Control.
Our writer, D. Griffin Jones, tried out a selection of cases with built-in capacitive buttons and cutouts, to see which worked best. Here are his findings.

Donald Trump recently called on law enforcement to open up the iPhones of his two would-be assassins. Surprisingly for Trump, he appears to be a bit mixed up about how iPhone security works.
I recently bought a portable CarPlay screen and it’s fantastic. There’s no better navigation and infotainment system for your car. Mine has a fairly small screen, but this 9-inch monster is on sale for less than $95.

Here’s a handy tip. If you accidentally turned off Bluetooth on your Mac and it disconnected your mouse, here’s how to turn it back on with just a keyboard.
Some people actually like the much-maligned and now-discontinued Touch Bar on older MacBooks. If that’s you, check out this refurbished MacBook Pro with Touch Bar for just $450.

One more thing ...
Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.
