All my life, I’ve loved Sony gear.
When I was a teenager, I scrimped and saved to get a Walkman portable cassette player. The flimsy headphones were rubbish, and I spent hours repairing the cassettes it regularly chewed up with a pencil and some tape, but I loved it.
My dad had various Sony stereo components that always sounded better than the cheapo British brands we could afford (mostly acquired on layaway or from our hippie neighbor Will, who bought and sold used stereo gear to supplement his dole).
Steve Jobs was always a huge admirer of the brand, too.
Jobs emulated Sony’s premium design, attention to detail and constant innovation. He even collected Sony marketing materials.
Jobs also modeled Apple’s first factories on Sony’s after he toured one in Japan. He even wanted Apple workers to wear factory uniforms like their Japanese counterparts — an idea American workers rejected. But Jobs liked the idea of uniforms so much, he adopted it for himself with his iconic black turtlenecks.
Sony has a lot more competition these days in the electronics market, but still makes a lot of the best stuff out there — including headphones.
In fact, Sony’s diversified lineup of headphones and earbuds can be a bit intimidating at first glance. Our headphones expert, David Snow, breaks it down. Here’s all you need to know about Sony’s headphones and earbuds and how they work with Apple devices.

I’ve been on a mad Amazon Prime Big Deal Days shopping spree, snapping up a new iPad, AirPods, a cheap action cam, a four-pack of dirt-cheap AirTag alternatives and more. My wife’s gonna kill me, but it’s worth it! The bad news is that the incredible $50 Beats Pill speaker deal I wrote about yesterday has sold out, partly because I ordered not one but two of them. Luckily, there are still lots of bargains to be had, although other stuff is starting to sell out and the sale ends today. We rounded up deals from great brands like Anker, Logitech and Twelve South, as well as great buys on essentials like hard drives and SSDs. Good luck with your spouses!
Apple dropped a firmware update for AirPods that might fix the annoying whistling sound that’s been plaguing some users. I saw at least one report on the socials that the firmware improves sound quality. Here’s how to force an update.
If you need live translation in chat, it looks like Meta’s WhatsApp is the tool to use — it just added support for 21 languages. And surprisingly for Meta, it’s pretty mindful of privacy.
I remember there was a lot of excitement about GT Advanced Technologies, an Arizona company that promised ultra-durable sapphire glass screens for iPhone. Alas, it turned out to be a pipe dream.

I love seeing vestiges of pre-iOS 7 design still exist in iOS 26: the network link conditioner under developer options in settings.
Look at that bold font, and the checkmark ✔️

Found another example: iTunes Store
Zero Liquid Glass and untouched since the iOS 7 flattening, but still you can get the latest Taylor Swift album
The best part: the app still lets you customise the bottom tab bar, a feature that existed when iOS was still called iPhone OS

One more thing ...
I used to say that Apple should be the Sony of this business, but in reality, I think Apple should be the Apple of this business.
