Apple settles ‘butterfly’ keyboard lawsuit

I bought one of the first MacBooks with the dreaded butterfly keyboard -- and loved it.

Although a bit weird to type on at first because the keystroke was so minimal, it didn't take long to get used to, and I marveled at the keyboard's svelte profile.

My son now uses the machine and improbably, the keyboard still hasn't failed -- probably the only one in existence!

It seemed to me the butterfly keyboard was a good example of what Apple often does so well: push the state of the art forward.

Alas, I was completely wrong and the design is a disaster, as Apple has just not admitted in court.

Apple agreed to a preliminary settlement Monday for a suit that claimed the company knew its super-thin MacBook keyboard was defective but kept selling it anyway. Apple admitted no wrongdoing but agreed to pay up to $50 million, most of which will go to customers who had to replace the keyboards.
