Apple's about to fold!

The iPhone's screen, that is.

I’m pretty excited about a folding iPhone.

I don’t have a ton of experience with folding phones, but what I have seen leaves me impressed.

My neighbor loves his Samsung Galaxy Z Fold phone. I played around with it for a while. It’s immediately obvious how useful and compelling it is to have a bigger screen when you need it.

However, the device — which is a couple of years old now — has a noticeable crease in the screen and is pretty chunky when folded in half. My neighbor claims the heft doesn’t bother him, but after getting used to ever-thinner Apple devices, I suspect the extra thickness would quickly become tiresome.

The good news is that newer devices from Samsung’s rivals have recently improved markedly, with less-noticeable screen creases and very thin bodies.

I’m sure these are two features that Apple will prioritize, and the company appears to be on track to launch its first foldable iPhone as soon as next year — if it doesn’t encounter significant technical challenges as the device moves toward production.

  • A new version of the low-cost iPhone SE is likely to launch this week, but we already know almost everything about it — and it’s going to be a very nice device.

  • Better get to downloading. Apple issued important security updates today for iPhone and iPad that fix a security hole the company says is likely being actively exploited. Apple Watches, Macs and other Apple gear received updates today as well.

  • If you use your iPhone in the car or on a train or bus, Apple’s new Vehicle Motion Cues feature can help prevent motion sickness. Here’s how it works.

  • Of all the classic Macs, the Color Classic is perhaps my favorite. I remember the transition to color Mac screens like it was a scene from The Wizard of Oz.
