Apple fixes Safari, but update uncertain

There's a nasty bug in Safari 15 (and WebKit, its underlying technology) that can reveal your recent browsing history and even your identity.

Apple quickly prepared a fix for the bug, according to a WebKit commit on GitHub, but there's no timeline for when the fix will be rolled out. It could be a while.

Meanwhile, since the bug is in WebKit, it also affects third-party browsers like Chrome and Firefox on iOS. (Apple requires all iPhone and iPad browsers to use WebKit.)

The good news is that it doesn't affect iOS 14 or iPadOS 14, so if you haven't yet upgraded -- don't!

Because it’s a bug in WebKit — Apple’s browser engine used by Safari and third-party apps in the App Store — this problem affects virtually all iOS and iPadOS browsers, including Chrome and Brave. Unfortunately, Apple’s patch won’t be available until the company rolls out new macOS, iOS and iPadOS updates.

We have disappointing news for those thinking of swapping their Android smartphone for an iPhone. Apple just cut its trade-in prices for a bunch of popular handsets from Google and Samsung, and the reductions are pretty significant.

Writing on an iPad with a fingertip is ridiculous, but an Apple Pencil is overkill for many people. The Adonit Neo Duo is an active stylus with a fine tip that works well for taking notes of sketching. As a bonus, press a button and it also writes on iPhone.

If you spent $19 on Apple’s fancy Polishing Cloth, you should know how to properly look after it. You can’t just throw it in the washing machine with your mucky laundry when it starts to get dirty.

The new entry-level handset is expected to bring 5G connectivity to the iPhone SE series for the first time.
