AirPods vs. Beats

How to choose between Apple's high-end earbuds.

I want the new Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds so bad, but I don’t have enough ears to justify the purchase.

I already own dozens of headphones and earbuds, and I don’t have enough time as it is to put them all into rotation. Plus, my wife, always sensibly frugal, would likely cut off one of my body parts with a rusty knife if I bought another set of earbuds.

But I keep coming across reports of the Powerbeats Pros’ great sound. I own a pair of Beats Studio Pro headphones, and prefer their bass-heavy sound signature to AirPods’ more neutral tone.

Still, there’s the AirPods Pros’ new ability to act as hearing aids — which I’ve taken advantage of — and their excellent volume-adjustment controls, which rank among the greatest input systems Apple ever devised.

Oh, decisions, decisions. If you’re also eyeing these high-end earbuds, check out our Powerbeats Pro 2 versus AirPods Pro 2 comparison to help you choose.
