5G MacBooks are way overdue
The very first generation of iPad, introduced by Steve Jobs back in 2010, offered built-in cellular connectivity as an option.
While out and about, users could easily connect to the internet via the 3G network.
In the 12 years since, iPads with built-in cellular have continued to be very popular. So it's a complete head-scratcher why Apple doesn't offer MacBooks with built-in 5G.
Of course, Wi-Fi abounds and you can easily tether your MacBook to your iPhone.
But if it's good enough for iPad, why not MacBook?
Apple should start off 2023 right by building cellular into its portable computers -- it's way, way overdue.
-- Leander Kahney, EIC.
If you want a MacBook with 5G cellular wireless built into it, new data suggests you’re not alone. Just like iPads, today’s slim and lightweight MacBooks are ready to go anywhere. There’s no reason to force them to depend on Wi-Fi or an iPhone hotspot.
It’s 2023 and the standalone classical music app that Apple promised for 2022 is nowhere to be seen. It’s not clear whether it’s late or has been quietly killed off.
The CEO of Epic Games teased Fortnite fans that the game will once again be playable on iPhone in 2023. That would be quite a turnaround, as Apple blocked Epic from the App Store back in 2020 during a lengthy court battle.
Why start the new year low on storage space? Avoid frustrations and reduce the risk of lost files in 2023 and beyond by taking advantage of a surprisingly low price on Degoo Premium’s 10TB backup plan. Normally sold for $3,600, this lifetime package is primed to make life a little less stressful for only $199.99.
This week on Cult of Mac’s podcast: We’re talking about all the Apple gear we’re certain will arrive in 2023 — and some we just hope will materialize. Plus, a $48 Apple Watch Ultra clone, why Apple skimps on cloud storage, and our picks for best of 2022.
On January 2, 1979, entrepreneurs Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston incorporated Software Arts to publish a little program called VisiCalc.
There’s nothing like starting over in a brand-new year. One of the best ways to do it is to freshen things up in the place where you spend so much of your waking life — your workspace. But rather than just rewarding yourself with a thrilling new mouse pad, why not roll out a whole new computer setup?
Tweet o' the day
I’d just like everyone to know that @united has lost track of my bag and is lying about it. My apple AirTag shows that it has been sitting in a residential apartment complex for over a day. Out back by the dumpsters, I have found other emptied United Airlines bags.

One more thing ...
"My job is to work with sort of the top 100 people, that's what I do. That doesn't mean they're all vice presidents. Some of them are just key individual contributors. So when a good idea comes, you know, part of my job is to move it around, just see what different people think, get people talking about it, argue with people about it, get ideas moving among that group of 100 people, get different people together to explore different aspects of it quietly, and, you know -- just explore things." -- Steve Jobs, 2008.
