15 years of iPhone frenzy
The first iPhone went on sale 15 years ago today, and I remember going to Apple's retail store in San Francisco for the launch.
Jony Ive was there with a few of his colleagues from Apple's Industrial Design team. They parked themselves on the second-floor balcony to watch as customers streamed in, hooting and hollering to buy the first iPhone.
Similar scenes played out at stores in New York and other major cities. Some folks had slept for days on the sidewalk to get their hands on the first iPhone. The lines in New York were especially crazy, with all kinds of overexcited fans, publicity seekers and general NYC crazies in attendance.
My wife dressed our kids as iPhones to drum up publicity for one of my books, and my son Lyle showed up in newspapers and magazines worldwide, thanks to a syndicated photo. Alas, they spelled his name wrong, and my chances for reflected glory were dashed. Maybe next time.

The recent news that iPads won’t function as Home Hubs with iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 stands corrected. Apple now says they’ll work. But they won’t benefit from any new features in the revamped HomeKit and Home app. And that’s likely to be a pretty big drawback.

Rad Wagon 4 is an electric utility bike with space for your groceries, cargo and kids [Under Review] — www.cultofmac.com
After a year on the road and almost 600 miles, I’ve gotten to know the Rad Wagon 4. And no joke, this electric cargo bike played a part in my family deciding to sell our second vehicle. For the power, price, versatility and build quality, I don’t think there’s a bike on the road that beats the Rad Wagon.
Apple says its new global Apple Community+ will recognize and reward top contributors in the Apple Support Community. The new program will provide “access to special perks, white-glove experiences, and more."

If you’ve ever wanted to hide a face before posting a picture, MaskerAid (a pun on “masquerade”) will quickly censor faces with emoji. Unlike apps like Snapchat, MaskerAid will preserve the full quality and resolution of your pictures.
We can count the number of times we’ve come across a three-Pro Display XDR workstation in our Setups travels on less than one hand — maybe two or three times. And if you throw in a late-model Mac Pro and a pile of great audio-visual gear for professional-level videoconferencing, well, that’s even more rare. Liam Hudson, CEO of a qualitative electronic trading company, sent his “ultimate computer setup” for at-home work to Cult of Mac. And it’s really something.
